Give Thanks – It’s Good for Your Health

It’s the week to be thankful. Since we were old enough to talk, we have been encouraged to devote this time of year to talking about the parts of our life about which we are most thankful. Thinking about what you are thankful for, however, should be more than just an annual exercise.

Research shows that being thankful is actually good for your health – both mental and physical. You may hear terms such as “an attitude of gratitude” or “gratitude journal” and hear people espouse their benefits. Maybe you think you are already thankful for the good in your life. You probably hug and kiss your children every day and tell them you love them. Doesn’t that constitute thankfulness?  It might, but why not make a plan to incorporate gratitude into your everyday life?

Why?

Better physical health. Practicing gratitude can strengthen your immune system and lower your blood pressure.

Have more positive emotions. If you really stop and think about something that makes you happy, you’ll feel more positive about life.

Exhibit more compassion. Have you ever noticed that when life gets you down, you don’t feel very compassionate toward others? Making your own mood more positive will help you be kind to the people around you.

How?

Schedule it: Since you’re trying to develop a new habit, you can remind yourself of it by setting the alarm on your mobile phone, partnering with a friend or family member to check in on the topic once a day, or even put a sticky note on your mirror.

Share it: Whether you write a letter, email or text to someone about whom you are thankful, it will feel good to spread the feeling.

Make it artistic: If you’re visually inclined, make a collage that includes the things for which you are thankful.

Journal it: Keep a journal – whether paper or electronic – about what you are thankful for in your life.

Now is as good a time as ever to add gratitude to your everyday life. Try it … You’ll thank us!
